Recently, we were able to have the pleasure of testing out the Pioneer DJM-400 in our studio. We found that this little bad boy gave us all of the features that were included in the now infamous DJM-800, but with even more added features. The main difference between the two is that the DJM-400 only has two channels, whereas the 800 features four. Pioneer has been on the forefront of innovation when it came to DJ mixers, and nothing has changed with the DJM-400. We found that it was very easy to just jump on this particular mixer and start cutting and eq’ing like a pro, but there were enough advanced features to keep the most seasoned DJ entertaining and expressive in their performance. There are many features that stood out to us when we were tinkering with it here in the studio. Here are just a few that caught our eye.
The Pioneer DJM-400 contains all of the now club standard effect that its big brother has become so well known for. We already knew that the effects have all been tailored to fit perfectly over mastered material that you will mix, so it seems like anywhere you have the dial, it sounds incredible.
In addition to the more well-known effects that are contained in mixers, you have processing in 24-bit/96khz quality. You also have more elaborate effects than just the common flanger and delay. There is a really nice robot effect that fit perfect over the Frequency 528 track, “Control.” This mixer’s effect section is perfect for elektro breaks! The filter included in the DJM-400 is better than the ones that you will find on more economically designed mixers, which skimp in so many areas to save you a buck.
This thing is built like a tank too. Now we can really why the pioneer mixer has become standard for use in clubs across the entire world after testing this unit out.
One of the coolest things about the Pioneer DJM-400 is the fact that it has a on-board sampler. We found that this was integrated very nicely due to the fact that all of your four beat loops are automatically synced with the incoming audio. this makes it easy for newbies to add some extra flare, as well as given seasoned veterans new aspects of expression within their mixes.
The front panel features all of the basic mixing controls that you would expect to find on a professional mixer, such as EQ control, and switch selections for changing from line inputs and phono. This mixer had an impressive low level of signal noise, which is always a necessity for playing on a really big system.
If you are looking for a professional grade mixer, without breaking the bank, we found that the Pioneer DJM-400 is a wise choice. We just wish that we were able to keep it after evaluating it. The DJM-400 would make a great addition to any DJ’s rig, if for just effects alone.
