Guitar Bass & Effects

Origin of bass guitars

Bass Guitars originated due to the necessity of louder individual bass instruments. During the 1920’s, a period were no bass guitars existed, individual bass players played the same part simultaneously. But later, the need for much louder bass became evident. Several prototypes of electrical bass developed. But they differed from the current bass guitars because they were unfretted and played vertically.

Soon the upright bass originated, but this double bass did not give any freedom of movement to the player because it is fixed to an end pin and the instrument stands vertically. This lead to the introduction of the new portable and easily amplified instrument, the electric bass guitar. Thus the electric bass guitars and the upright bass guitars are continuing to rock the rock world.

Bass guitars are best for:

Basically there are two kinds of basses, the upright bass guitar and the electric bass guitar. The double bass or the upright bass guitar is played with a bow; were the electric bass guitar has its strings plucked. Transportation, amplification and recording are easier in electric bass guitars compared to the upright basses. Electric bass guitars are popular and many different styles of playing the bass guitar originated during the 1980s and 1990s. One such style is called the Slapping, where the player slaps the lower strings with his thumb and he plucks the higher strings with his fingers. This style became very trendy in the jazz and pop music since it resembled the music from the drums.

Bass guitars resemble the traditional guitars except for some differences in their structure and tone. The bass guitars are four stringed, whereas the traditional guitars have six strings. The body of the bass guitar looks a bit elongated and it has a long scaled neck. The major difference between the bass guitar and the traditional guitar is that the notes produced by the bass guitar have a lower octave in pitch. Acoustic bass guitars were introduced with an aim of clubbing the acoustic guitars with the basses. And these guitars are also used by many jazz musicians.

Bass guitars sometimes will be fretted, while unfretted instruments are also available. Frets are nothing but crest like structures, which are present in the finger board of the guitar. Fretted base guitars are more commonly used than the non fretted ones.
Bass guitars need to be amplified, so that they can be audible, especially electric bass
Guitars. The music produced from the base guitar would be more deep, rich and resonating. That’s why most musicians choose the bass guitar to produce a different outlook.

If you are a bass guitarist you can adopt any of these playing styles:

Static: in this kind of playing, the musician will either sit or stand in a place, without moving around. This kind of playing is acceptable in the jazz and orchestras.
Plucking with a plectra or using fingers: some players pluck the strings with the plectra, while some others use their fingers or thumbs. The difference is that the plectra give a very audible thumping sound, while the sound produced by using the finger proves to be very soft and subtle.
Position for plucking: some players who wanted very high enthusiastic music pluck the string near the bridge, for soft music they pluck the strings near the neck.

In addition to frets bass guitars have additional variations like decorative shapes, large blocks and small dots near the neck.
Bass guitars possess solid bodies; certain variations are present either to increase the resonance of the music or to reduce weight. There are some basses with hollow bodies, which help in easy handling of the instrument.
