This thing is built like a tank. I mean... it weighs 14 pounds, that right there should give you an idea of how sturdy and solid it is. The keys feel like they could take a beating. The plastic used to make it is high-quality. The continous knobs make a clicking noise when you turn them, allowing for precise tweaking. The pads are solid, and feel just like the pads on the Trigger Finger. I take off 1 because just like on the Trigger Finger, the faders are a LITTLE flimsy, but hey, there are 9 of them, which I love, I can do all my leveling on the Axiom, I rarely ever use more than 9 channels on my mixer.

Keyboard action is great if you like playing chords and prefer the feel of full sized keys. These are semi-weighted keys, but they don't tire the hands. It actually has a very nice feel. Some people may really not prefer it if they are used to 'synth action' or whatever they call it. THIS IS JUST A CONTROLLER, NO SOUNDS. Use it with a sound box (buy a yamaha motif rack or whatever you want) and it will be like having the actual keyboard (minus the workstation part). If you want all the other specs just find the official listings. I don't need to tell you about the velocity and all of that. The pads are a little weird. I presume you could utilize them well if you're not a nitpicking brat...but i would agree that one would want to get a separate pad if these feel a little strange in any way. I experienced minor to moderate frusturation with these pads within 15 minutes...but i'm sure I could still use them!

For the price and the features I think it's still a good deal regardless of its shortcomings. It works as well as I had anticipated. The drum pads are cool but not as good as I expected. I would highly recommend it for use with Reason. If you're new to computer music and you just want to plug and play, this probably isn't the controller for you. You'll find yourself spending hours configuring the controls and then trying to map them to your applications functions. I don't understand why M-Audio wouldn't take the time to build presets like they have for Reason.

The M-Audio Axiom 49 is the best controller I have ever purchased. The Axiom series is extremely compact and lightweight and all models are powered directly from your computer’s USB bus. This attractive controller can take your music anywhere you want to go.

This controller has Everything. 49 semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, 9 faders, 8 360° continuous knobs, 8 pressure-sensitive OR velocity-sensitive pads (not both simultaneously like the Trigger Finger), and transport controls for loop, rewind, forward, stop, play, and record. Along with an ability to split up the keyboard into different octaves and zones. And every single thing on this controller is assignable to pretty much anything. The Axiom also has those features found on pretty much every contoller like a mod wheel, pitch bend, and transpose buttons. And all of this info is displayed on a large blue backlit LCD display.

Once I got it out of the box it literally took only 30 seconds to setup. It's class compliant with Windows XP and Mac OS X so as soon as you plug the usb cable in, the OS recognizes it and assigns it drivers automatically. After that using it to contol my favorite VSTs was very easy. Assigning the control parameters is easy and not a daunting task. Absolutely the most playable keys I have ever used, they feel very natural, not springy or too stiff, they're just right. With the pads, knobs, faders, and transport controls, you can pretty much do everything from the Axiom.
