PreSonus Eureka Preamp and Compressor is a professional recording channel strip containing a discrete class A transformer-coupled microphone preamplifier, FET compressor, and three-band parametric equalizer. PreSonus Eureka comes with variable input impedance so that the Eureka can be matched and "tuned" for all types of microphones and recording applications. This Class A transformer-coupled Mic Preamp also features "SATURATE" which adjusts the drain current on the input FET amplifier to simulate of the effects of tape saturation and tube "warmth".
PreSonus Eureka sports a compressor with variable threshold, attack, release and gain makeup. It offers a soft knee compression mode, as well as a high-pass filter on the sidechain for frequency dependent compression, which is useful for de-essing and other frequency specific compression applications. The three-band fully parametric EQ gives you variable Q (bandwidth) on each band as well as an EQ pre COMP switch to put the EQ before the Compressor in the signal path. The equalizer has overlapping frequency selection on each band for total tonal control and shaping. PreSonus Eureka has microphone, instrument and line inputs so you can use it as a front end preamplifier for recording with guitars, keyboards, microphones, synths as well as a compressor/equalizer on a single channel during mixdown. PreSonus Eureka microphone preamplifier gives you the balanced send and return jacks so that you can insert your favorite outboard processor before the compressor/EQ to further enhance and customize your sound. | Features | | Class A High Headroom Transformer Coupled Microphone Preamplifier Variable Microphone Input Impedance Variable SATURATE control (simulates tape saturation and tube warmth) Fully Variable Compressor with Hi-pass Side Chain Three Band Fully Parametric Equalizer EQ Pre or Post Compressor High Headroom Output Section Very Low Noise Design Internal Power Supply Transparent, wide range performance Optional 24-Bit/192k Digital Output Card (AD192) | Specifications | | Channels: One Dynamic Range: >115dB Headroom: +22dB Frequency Response: 10Hz to 50kHz Internal Operating Level: 0dBu = 0B Microphone Preamp Gain: +12dB to +52dB Noise Floor: -112dBu (+12dB gain) EIN: -127dB THD + Noise (0% saturation): <0.005% THD + Noise (full saturation): <0.5% Microphone Input Connector: XLR Microphone Input Impedance (selectable): 2.5k, 1.5k, 600, 150, 50 Ohms Instrument Input Connector: 1/4 in. 02/07/2008 - I have two Eurekas that i bought to stereo micing along with my Earthworks Lab Preamp. The Eureka have a lot of headroom to play with a very low noise. I track everything like acoustics, vocals, bass and drums with great results. I wish the knobs are more bigger or detailed. Too much knobs for one 19" rack space. But, the quality is awesome. I never use EQ when tracking, so i can't comment about it. The pre is very clean, and the compressor is great for gentle tweaks to get a uncolored, musical, great tone.

05/14/2007 - Good sound for the money for the $400-500.00 range. Of course, if you had the money, you would buy a Manley or Avalon mic pre instead, unless you own this to begin with. This is for people who want a much better EQ than they get on the Mackie or Behringer mixing boards. Plus, there's the added benefit of having a natural sounding compressor as well, as opposed to a computer plug in.

01/28/2007 - I recently had the opportunity to use Eureka with a really great microphone, the Telefunken Elam 251, a vintage tube microphone from 1959 the sells for upwards of $25,000. I also tried it with a much more modestly priced Shure SM57. After an initial bit of trial and error, I started to get some really great results in a short amount of time. Later, I used the SM57 dynamic on an electric guitar amp and for some acoustic guitar, and I mic’d a bass drum with an AKG D112 through it. The Eureka’s silky bottom and ultra sparkling clean top end were hallmarks of all these tests, and the Eureka definitely displayed a chameleon-like quality in being able to tackle all these chores easily. This thing sounds like stuff that costs four times as much!

09/10/2006 - what more do you want? It has a pre with selectable impedence, compressor, eq and a saturate knob. I used it in the studio on my snare drum with a beta 57 and i hit the snare pretty loud and the pre wouldn't seem to clip or hear any noticable distortion on this too, usually on the snare, in my exprience, the snare wouldn't require that much gain. I do wish there was more of an LED on the pre section besides the 3 LED's it has on it.
