Outputs on the Inspire 1394 include RCA unbalanced and mini TRS jacks as well as headphone output. Software Control Panel The Inspire 1394 is completely controlled by an easy-to-use software mixer interface called the Control Panel. Controls include, input gain, phantom power, limiter (off/on), preamp boost (off/on), sample rate, headphone volume, main output volume as well as zero latency input mixing with playback mixing. This software control panel also serves as a mixer between your computer playback and your inputs for zero latency recording. The software control panel also features Load, Save functionality so that you can save and recall all of your settings from session to sesson. Daisy Chain for More Inputs The Inspire 1394 is equipped with two FireWire connectors enabling the ability to daisy-chain up to Four Inspire 1394's together for up to sixteen simultaneous inputs at 24-bit/96k recording rate. 02/11/2008 - The XLR inputs include essential features like 48V phantom power and integrated preamps, so that you can connect most microphones, including condenser types, with a minimum of fuss. The preamps were “vanilla” in that they didn’t noticeably color the sound, and are comparable to those you’d find in a decent compact mixer. They do the trick, which is exactly what you’d expect from a $229.95 box. Also included are separate boost and limit functions. Boost adds a bit more power to the preamp, which can be handy for mics that have decidedly low outputs. The only downside is that at maximum volume, a bit of digital whine starts creeping into the signal. It can’t be a ground loop if everything is running on batteries, but in fairness, I’ve heard this on many FireWire and USB audio interfaces when they’re opened up all the way. Proper gain-setting practices will all but eliminate this, and your recorded signal will generally mask what’s left, so it’s not really a huge issue — just something to be aware of. The built-in limiter is heaven-sent, and only kicks in if you start to clip, without adding unnecessary color to the signal. Overall, both of these amenities are extremely welcome and add real value to the Inspire.

10/28/2006 - Considering its size — and more importantly, its price — the Presonus Inspire 1394 offers a heck of a lot of bang for the buck. It sounds great, fits in a backpack, connects easily to a FireWire-enabled laptop, and is totally cross-platform. Every once in a while, a product comes along that’s so useful and well-designed that it becomes a part of my permanent arsenal after the review period. This is definitely one of those products.
